Department of Soil and Plant System

Research

Research carried out in the Laboratory of Molecular and Environmental Microbiology, focus primarily on the problems associated with microbiological agricultural practices and the protection of the environment, especially the soil environment.

The main research areas include:

  • the use of microorganisms in the process of detoxification, treatment and utilization of industrial and agricultural organic waste
  • assessment of functional and genetic diversity of soil microorganisms community
  • assess the effect of post-fermentation sludge, sewage sludge and other waste materials on soil biological activity
  • ecology of bacteria and saprotrophic micro-fungi, their biochemical activity and possibility of using these microorganisms in the biological degradation of various types of waste
  • natural microbial communities present in organic waste and soil environment, in order to isolate strains important for biotechnology sector

Research conducted in our laboratory are very important for environmental protection, due to the increasing year by year waste production, both municipal waste, industrial, agricultural, as well as waste generated by the biogas treatment plant – where post-fermentation sludge are produced. The impact of waste on soil microbial activity is an important parameter in the assessment of soil quality.
