This section introduces the European Charter for Researchers — the framework of principles that underpins the Institute’s HR Excellence in Research (HRS4R) commitments. In its revised 2023 form (Council Recommendation of 18 December 2023), the Charter sets out 20 key principles grouped into four thematic pillars — Ethics, Integrity, Gender and Open Science; Researchers’ Assessment, Recruitment and Progression; Working Conditions and Practices; and Research Careers and Talent Development — describing the rights and responsibilities of researchers and their employers and the conditions for an open, attractive, and supportive research environment. The Institute has committed to bringing its policies and practices into line with the Charter’s principles and to reviewing its progress on a regular basis.
