Profile of scientific activity:

The research topics carried out in the Microalgae Biotechnology Laboratory focus on the study of the metabolism of unicellular photosynthetic plant organisms – microalgae – in response to environmental factors (chemical, physical and biological), including stress caused by environmental pollutants. Research is also focusing on the use of agricultural waste and by-products, liquid digestate and waste water in the cultivation of unicellular algae. The research involves optimizing the culture conditions of selected species in order to: obtain biomass with increased content of valuable bioproducts, including saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, and increase the synthesis of extracellular polymers (EPS).These bioproducts are used in the food, feed and wastewater treatment sectors. Analyses include: cell growth processes, chlorophyll fluorescence, conditions of synthesis and accumulation of intracellular metabolites and extracellular polymers. To understand the influence of unicellular algal growth conditions on the structure and properties of extracellular polymers, the chemical composition of EPS is studied and the remediation potential of isolated extracellular polymers is investigated.
