Robert Sparkes is an organic geochemist in the Department of Natural Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. He researches the erosion, transport, deposition, and long-term burial of organic carbon in coastal ecosystems. His work has covered three main areas: the offshore burial of organic carbon from active mountain belts, the release of carbon from thawing Arctic permafrost, and the storage of carbon in saltmarshes and other coastal environments. He uses elemental, isotopic and molecular geochemistry techniques to characterise and quantify the type and amount of carbon present in the environments, and models the effects of carbon transport and burial on the carbon cycle.
